The Guardian’s “Guardian Doc” series features new weekly shorts, produced around the world, by "the best independent filmmakers." This week’s offering “I was Ronald McDonald” is a six-minute short with Joe Maggard,a man who served as McDonald’s mascot and “chief happiness officer” from 1995 to 2007. Maggard still serves as Ronald despite being officially listed as “retired” and is quick to point out the difference between himself and Ronald.
Who knew that Ronald McDonald was a high-fiving, cigar-smoking retiree living in Vegas? Of particular note is Maggard performing a particularly stirring rendition of “Send in the Clowns.”
